Welcome to Ein Sokhna!

A holiday in Egypt need not necessarily be restricted to the classic route of the Nile, the Pyramids and heritage sites of Luxor and Aswan. In fact, when you're a little weary of the fabulous sensory overload that's Cairo, probably the best thing you could do is take off for a day trip or, better still, a relaxing weekend in a nice Ein Sokhna hotel at the beach resort of Ein Sokhna.
El Ein El Sokhna in Arabic means ‘hot springs', a reference to the sulphur springs in Gebel Ataqa, a mountain in the nearby Eastern Desert. The area is located 40 km south of the Suez port and falls under the Suez Governorate. There are better-known Red Sea resorts, like Sharm el-Sheikh and Hurghada, but travelling to these resorts eats into your holiday time. The advantage Ein Sokhna has to offer is proximity to Cairo, just 140 km east of the capital, or a little over an hour's drive away.
Stretching along the coast for 60 km from Suez, currently Ein Sokhna consists of a cruise port, privately owned Egyptian vacation villas and a string of Ein Sokhna resorts and hotels, some affiliated to international chains. Recent years have seen the mushrooming of chalet and villa-style Ein Sokhna resorts and sprawling developments, catering to the increased influx of tourists from Arab countries. During the cruise season that stretches between October and April, getting a hotel in Ein Sokhna at short notice can sometimes pose a problem.
The waters of the Red Sea sparkle in divine shades of turquoise and blue; also, Ein Sokhna's beaches are invitingly litter-free. There is a lot to see and do in Ein Sokhna. Swim, snorkel, or go deep-sea fishing. Rent a canoe or sailboat and explore the quiet coves and coral reefs - the choices are plenty. Landlubbers can try their hand at a few rounds of golf or get down to the serious business of acquiring the perfect tan.
It's hard to get away from history anywhere in Egypt. Take an interesting Ein Sokhna tour and discover the art and architecture of Coptic Egypt at St. Anthony's Monastery and St. Paul's Monastery, believed to be among the world's oldest surviving monasteries. Some historians believe that a point at Mount Galala El Bahareya was the site from where Moses led the Jews across the Red Sea into the Sinai Peninsula - because the sea floor of the Gulf of Suez is more elevated here. Then of course, an Ein Sokhna tour to the historic Suez Canal is a must do.
The larger Ein Sokhna resorts offer their own bazaars and malls, with a few independent stores operating in some. Great to browse around in the evenings and pick up handmade apparel, jewellery, Egyptian crafts and souvenirs. Restaurants in the resorts offer a variety of cuisines, both Middle Eastern and international. If you must have fast food, you'll be pleased to know that international brands have set up shop in Ein Sokhna.
